What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a unique and ancient system of medicine which states that the body has energy that is in constant change. Qi is the energy of the universe that flows in our body through paths that are called meridians or energy channels. Qi manifests in various forms such in the yin yang theory and in the 5-element theory. When the Qi flows throughout our body without any blockage, our body is in good health because our body is in balance. This means that Qi is in every organ and tissue of our body. However, when there is a blockage in the meridians, the Qi cannot flow properly and this leads to an imbalance in our organism causing disharmony and disease. Therefore, Chinese medicine aims to restore the balance and harmony in ourselves by working with the body’s energetic part (Ody 8).

By correcting the balance of Qi in our organism, Chinese medicine can cure illness, diseases, pains, and it can prevent them. Chinese medicine addresses a variety of different therapies such as acupuncture, herbal therapy, moxibustion, ear acupuncture, cupping and many other treatments in order to return balance to our body. As you could see this method is very different from the occidental medicine, but is one of the most efficient ones. (Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation).

Next, there is a video from the Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation website where Nan Lu, OMD (oriental medicine doctor) talks about Qi and its relationship with Chinese medicine.

Below is a definition of Chinese medicine said by Jingqing Hua and Baoyan Liub in an article called “The basic theory, diagnostic, and therapeutic system of traditional Chinese medicine and the challenges they bring to statistics:”

“Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a history of thousands of years. It is formed by summarizing the precious experience of understanding life, maintaining health, and fighting diseases accumulated in daily life, production and medical practice. It not only has systematic theories, but also has abundant preventative and therapeutic methods for disease.”  ( Hu, Jingqing & Baoyan Liub 2012).
