12 Meridians

In traditional Chinese Medicine, there are 12 major meridians which are like energy channels. The function of the 12 major meridians is to carry energy (Qi) and other fundamental substances throughout our body. Each meridian corresponds to an organ zang or fu (zang corresponds to yin, and to the "solid" organs. Fu corresponds to yang, and to the "hollow" organs) (Ody 30).

Meridians are extremely important in our health since they are the pathways of Qi. Through the meridians, Qi is able to bring energy to every part and organ of the body. This makes our body be in balance (Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences).

It is very important for each meridian to remain without obstructions in order for them to distribute energy correctly through the body without inconveniences. If there is any obstruction in their path, there will be a lack of energy. This will cause imbalances which will eventually affect the person’s health in a negative way. Therefore, acupuncture points are located through the meridians, in order to free the meridians from any blockage; allowing Qi to return to its normal flowing in the body (Nagy, 2012).
